I suppose the picture above says it all, but I'll go ahead and bore you with a few other details of Schafer's first day of preschool. It started off on a good note at 8:40 am, as we headed to the school, and I realized that we were, in fact, supposed to be there at 8:30 am. Way to go Mama! Despite feeling like a complete soccer mom loser, Schafer had only missed a few minutes of the fun and he quickly settled in by his classmates to hear the rest of the story that his teacher was reading. I was mostly busy fiddling with my camera and feeling like a jerk for getting him there late THE FIRST FREAKING DAY, but I was vaguely aware of the story line being about a little boy who was nervous about his first day at school and away from his parents. It ended happily, of course.
Then we were instructed to say a quick goodbye to our kiddos and head on out. Travis and I were waiting expectantly in the back of the room and when Schafer turned towards us and headed our way, we were both rather taken aback to see him with huge, tear filled eyes and a trembling lip. He is rarely, if ever, concerned about being in new situations with new people, even if we aren't around. In fact, I'd say he sort of thrives on it. I wasn't sure how we were going to manage this unexpected and last minute separation anxiety, but a part of me was thinking, "Awwww...he's going to MISS us! We are just such great parents and so darn fun that he can't stand to be away from us for even a minute! Awwwww!!!" Or something like that. So he gets over to where we are and he says in a tiny little whisper we had to strain to hear, "Mom? I need to tell you sumfin." So I lean down and he says some choked little something or other in my ear...I can't understand, so he repeats. He says, in the saddest little voice I've ever heard, "Moooom??? Is school already ooooverr???" HA!!!! I assured him the day had just started and he had lots of time left at school. Crisis averted. Travis and I laughed at our foolishness on the way home...we actually thought SCHAFER was going to approach something like this timidly? and with sadness that he'd be on his own for a few hours? Silly, silly us.
I picked him up a few hours later and drug a few tidbits of information out of him. As follows...They had pretzel sticks for snack. The slides at his new school are much bigger than the ones at his old school. You can only go down on your bottom, which is a bummer. One boy cried ALL DAY because he missed his mom. There was another boy with a COOL Green Lantern Backpack. The End.

Schafer is such a ROCK STAR! I LOVE THIS POST! How foolish of you to think he was upset!! ;-) That first picture is probably the cutest thing EVER! Where did you get that adorable chalk board? I have been trying to think of a good idea for taking a "first day" picture every year of Colin and that chalk board is so cute!
Love this post! Wish I approached new situations with half the finesse Schafer does!
